Quad Bike vs Dune Buggy in Dubai: Which Should You Ride?

By Sahara Dune Adventures · · 6 min read

Two riders on red quad bikes on the dunes in Dubai

Riding through the dunes yourself is the most exciting way to see Dubai's desert. But there are two very different ways to do it. A quad bike (also called an ATV) is a four-wheeled motorbike you ride on your own. A dune buggy is a small, powerful off-road car with a steering wheel, seat belts and a roll cage. Both are a lot of fun. Which one suits you depends on your age, your budget, who you're with and how much power you want.

Key Takeaways

  • Quad bikes are cheaper, easy for beginners and come bundled with a full desert safari, from AED 199.
  • Dune buggies are much more powerful (1,000cc to 2,000cc) and feel like driving a rally car, from AED 299 for 30 minutes.
  • Quad bikes start at age 12. Self-drive buggies start at age 14 with a valid ID.
  • Buggies come in 1, 2 and 4-seat versions, so you can share the ride with a partner, friends or family.
  • No experience is needed for either. Instructors brief you first and ride with you the whole time.

What Riding a Quad Bike Feels Like

A quad bike is simple to learn. You sit on it like a motorbike, steer with the handlebars and use a thumb throttle to go. Most people feel confident within a few minutes. Our 250cc to 450cc quads are lively enough to be exciting without being scary.

Because you're out in the open, you feel every bit of the desert: the wind, the sand spray, the way the bike rises over each dune. It's a more physical ride than a buggy. You lean into turns and hold on with your arms and legs, so you'll feel it a bit the next day.

The big advantage of quad biking is that it fits into a full safari. You can choose:

All three include free pickup from Dubai and Sharjah. See them side by side on our quad bike desert safari page.

What Driving a Dune Buggy Feels Like

A dune buggy feels like a rally car built for sand. You sit low with a seat belt, a steering wheel and pedals, inside a strong roll cage. If you can drive a car, you can drive a buggy. But with 1,000cc to 2,000cc turbocharged engines, they are far more powerful than a quad.

Every buggy ride starts with a 15-minute safety briefing and a warm-up lap on flat sand before you take on the bigger dunes. Your instructor leads the way and stops at the best viewpoints for photos. The session ends with sandboarding.

Buggies are a great choice if you want to share the ride. A two-seater lets a couple or friends ride together, and a four-seater fits a family. Our options include:

Buggy prices include fuel, safety gear (helmet, goggles, neck brace and gloves), an instructor and sandboarding. Hotel pickup is a paid add-on.

Price Comparison

On price per person, quad biking wins clearly. AED 199 gets you a quad ride plus a full safari with transport and food. A 30-minute buggy session costs AED 299 per person on its own.

For groups, private buggies can work out well. A Polaris RZR 4-Seater is AED 990 for an hour for the whole buggy. Split between four people, that's under AED 250 each for twice the driving time.

Safety and Age Limits

Both rides are safe for beginners when you follow your instructor. Helmets and safety gear are provided and must be worn, and instructors ride with your group the entire time.

  • Quad bikes: minimum age 12, no exceptions. Younger children can join the safari but don't ride.
  • Self-drive dune buggies: minimum age 14 with a valid ID.
  • Private buggy tours: drivers must be 16 or over.
  • Clothing: closed-toe shoes are required for both, and long trousers are strongly recommended to protect against sand and hot engine parts.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose a quad bike if:

  • it's your first time riding anything off-road
  • you want the best value, with a full safari, dinner or breakfast included
  • you're travelling with teenagers aged 12 or 13
  • you want free hotel pickup

Choose a dune buggy if:

  • you want real power and speed
  • you'd like to sit side by side with a partner, friends or family
  • you prefer a seat belt and roll cage over riding in the open
  • you want a longer, more focused driving session

Can't decide? Many guests do a quad bike safari on one day and come back for a buggy later in their trip. If you love two wheels, we also run a dirt bike adventure from AED 349.

Tips for Your First Ride

  • Wear closed-toe shoes and long trousers. Sandals aren't allowed.
  • Bring sunglasses or use the goggles provided. Sand flies up, especially when riding in a group.
  • Cover your face with a light scarf or shemagh to keep dust out of your mouth.
  • Leave jewellery and loose items at the hotel or in the car.
  • Go at your own pace. Follow the instructor's line and leave space between vehicles.
  • Ride in the cooler hours in summer. Read our guide to the best time for a desert safari.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a dune buggy or a quad bike better for beginners?

Both are fine for beginners. A quad bike is easier to learn and cheaper. A dune buggy feels more secure because you sit inside a roll cage with a seat belt, and it's easy if you already drive a car.

What do I need to drive a dune buggy in Dubai?

Drivers on our self-drive buggies must be at least 14 and bring a valid ID. Private buggy tours need drivers aged 16 or over. If you're not sure which ID to bring, message us before your tour.

How long is a quad bike ride on a desert safari?

Between 35 and 45 minutes depending on the package. The VIP Premium + Quad Bike package includes 45 minutes.

Is hotel pickup included for dune buggy tours?

Hotel pickup from Dubai or Sharjah is a paid add-on for dune buggy tours. Our team confirms the price when you book. All quad bike safaris include free pickup.
